Thank you Carl, for all the info and experience you shared in the early years of the SGF. I learned a lot about Jerry Byrd and C6th from your posts.

There are players who have contributed mightily to the history of our instrument and those contributions can reflect many aspects beyond technical proficiency. Take Santo for instance. He could be described as a technically limited player yet try to reproduce his tone, vibrato and overall feel; it’s very difficult, perhaps impossible. Drake was another player who played “simply” yet connected emotionally with listeners. We Steelers often get so caught up in the technique and gear arms race that we forget that communicating with listeners is the true goal of playing music.

I think Steel Guitar Rag was once the benchmark instrumental for steel players, but nowadays it's regarded the same as drummer's playing "Wipe Out": every drummer knows it and 99% of drummers hate playing it. Most steel players when asked to play Steel Guitar Rag go "Oof, that song? Really?"

You Sir ain’t old yet! You’ll remember in 10 years looking back at today, and say “man, I was still sooo young back then”.
I’ll never firget you and our friendship and how you stood up for me, back when we were both even much younger!

Carl, There was no such thing as the Steel guitar forum (or maybe even internet) when you first came to St Louis.
AUTHORIZED PEAVEY, George L's, Goodrich dealer. I have 2 steels and several amps. My current rig of choice is 1993 Emmons LeGrande w/ 108 pups (Jack Strayhorn built for me), Goodrich OMNI Volume Pedal, George L's cables and Peavey Nashville-Session 112 or 115.
