Not Your Father's Steel Guitar

Post by Dave Grafe »

I'm playing a show this Sunday with my friend Eddie Hurley's Hurley Mountain Highway at the Silk Factory in Newburgh NY. HMH is the top cover band here in the Hudson River Valley and I am filling in for the keyboard player. There are a handful of popular pedal steel favorites but mostly I am covering well-known keyboard lines on the hits of the last century so the C9 pedal gets a workout. Lots of homework is involved but now I've got the piano intro to "Dancing in the Moonlight" and the B3 theme to "Whiter Shade of Pale" among other delights.

Dave gave me a demo of his “organ” playing and A Whiter Shade of Pale. Never guess it wasn’t an organ and Dave sounds great.

That's a fine little piano solo opening King Harvest's "Dancing in the Moonlight"; it would be interesting to hear it on steel guitar.

Oh yes I failed to mention they tune down a half step so everything is a semitone lower than the original. Lots of D#'s...
