Who's playing steel on this early Joe Stampley track?

Post by Per Berner »

Does anyone know who is playing pedal steel on Joe Stampley's "Dallas Alice" from around 1973? This was during his Dot years, before the "Roll on, Big Mama" breakthrough, and it's really inspired, innovative playing. The lead guitar player isn't half bad either, whoever he may be. The usual sources provide no answers.

Tommy Pyle played steel for Joe Stampley along about that time period or maybe a little later. Think he told me they got to do a few of Joe’s sessions but wished they could do more. I was working at the “Blues Lounge” on the Bossier strip. Tommy would come in about once a week and bring his ZB and “sit in” for me a few sets. Great player and great guy.

Interesting, Ricky, and I could believe it's Billy Sanford on lead guitar. But the steel really doesn't sound anything even remotely like Pete Drake, and the label on my copy – which looks to be the original pressing – says ©1973 & 1974 – which indicates at least two different sessions.

So many of the discography credits are OFF.
The original Poster was asking about who played on Joe Stampley's "Dallas Alice" and it was Lloyd Green.

I played for Joe Stampley for 5 years. From late 1979 to late 1985. "Dallas Alice" is a song we never did with Joe, and to tell the truth I never have heard it until now. It does sound like something Weldon would do, but for a number of years, Pete Drake played on almost everything. In 1979, Weldon was best known for the intro on Good Old Boys. Ray Baker, a producer during that time period used Weldon a lot and also for Moe Bandy. My dear friend Tommy Detamore played on the live Moe and Joe album "Live at Bad Bobs". I played on some of the songs also. Tommy played for the live Moe and Joe shows for convenience as when we did the shows, we would go on first with Joe, then Moe would do his show followed by the Moe and Joe show. I did play on Joe's album "Memory Lane" on some cuts, and Mike Johnson some. By the way, the last album cuts by Moe and Joe, Sonny Garrish played on.

I don't think Pete Drake played on Joe Stampley's records until the move from Dot to Epic. It's definitely him on "Roll on, Big Mama", couldn't be any one else. And Epic would probably favor the Columbia studio as indicated in Ricky's listing, both being owned by CBS. On my other 70s albums produced by Norro Wilson (quite a few), Weldon, Hal Rugg and Pete Drake are all commonly listed as steel players, so no definitive clues there either.

Listening to the "octave" sound, it could be Lloyd.

Mmm, could be Lloyd! A bit brighter than his usual tone, but he was (and still is, I hope) incredibly versatile. Well, I finally dug the vinyl album out of storage, and the cover says recorded in Jack Clement's studio – which rules out the suggested Columbia Studio credits. No additional info on the bespoke inner sleeve, sadly. The mystery remains.

I just finnished listening to the album on Youtube. In my opinion, on the first 3 songs it is Lloyd Green playing on steel, on the other songs Pete Drake.

I clearly hear Lloyd on "Backtrackin'", "Dallas Alice" and "Who Will I Be Loving Now", the other tracks feature Pete Drake.

Kind Regards, Walter

Steve's usually right. So I hate to disagree. But I think it's Pete trying to sound like Lloyd.

Yes Lloyd played on several Joe Stampley Albums; here's a Intro cut in 1974 which is where all those cuts we are talking about come from.>
http://www.lloydgreentribute.com/vocalc ... mpley1.mp3
Here's Backtrackin from Lloyd Green; just like Walter said>
http://www.lloydgreentribute.com/vocalc ... mpley2.mp3
Here is "who I will be lovin now" off Joe Stampley album 1974>
http://www.lloydgreentribute.com/vocalc ... mpley3.mp3
Just listen to Lloyd Play on all those and very easy to know when Lloyd is playing on ANYthing; and then there's all the others, in the way They play.
Walter and Steve are right on....They know when its Lloyd. I even talked to Lloyd one time and asked if he double tracked that "Dallas Alice"; he said: "I Sure Did"...and some of that double tracking that I heard him do on many different recordings was so cool that I did that on several of my Ex's songs long time ago>
(the first is double track harmony. The second is double track unison) Lloyd did both also.; so did John Hughey and so did Weldon and Sonny Garish.; you can hear how all my Mentors rubbed off on me; I LOVED EVERYTHING every one of those played on a million tracks..ah..ha..LOL.
