How do staggered knee levers work?

Post by Paul Strojan »

On some copedents, I see references to multiple levers on the same knee and I am curious how they work.

It's pretty straight forward, you'll have the two levers, one will be closer to the front of the cabinet, and the other closer to your body, and shifted slightly towards the head or tail of the guitar so there is space to push the front lever without moving the back one. Then you shuffle your body/hips to position your knee to hit one or the other lever.

I once had a Williams that had 2 LKL levers. The one one closest to me raised both E's to F. The farther one raised string 4 to F#.
It made for a very obvious 1/2-stop at F.
I was told that Tom Brumley had this change.

If a knee has 4 levers, usually, from what I've seen, the two that are further away are usually closer together so the closer levers don't get accidentally engaged.

I have two LKL levers. The inside one is the E raise and the outside one raises the F#'s to G. I originally had them somewhat apart so it was a challenge reaching the out side lever but I just had Dave Grafe set up my guitar and he was able to position them so the outside lever is in front of the inside lever but slightly staggered so it doesn't engage when I raise the E's but I can easily just slide my knee down off the inside lever to engage the outside LKL and back again in a very smooth single motion.
